Chapter Sixteen

I woke up from a restless sleep and prepared to go into the office before heading to the airport. I was so annoyed that I took the bait from Caleb. Of course, he would present himself as the upstanding boss with no feelings toward coworkers if he was already involved with one.

“Ugh.” I stirred nonfat milk into my gigantic coffee mug. “Men.”

I looked out the window, hoping the beautiful view of the city would lift my spirits.

It didn’t.

And now I had to be stuck out of town with a man who knew more about me physically than any other man. The same man who’d essentially ruined me for other men because I was foolish enough to fantasize that he’d see me again and all would start up where it left off when we were teenagers.

I let out another groan. “Ugh. Women. Why do we have to be so romantically inclined? Why can’t we just sleep with whoever, whenever and—”

My mind flashed to my best friend Winter, and I sighed.

I guess it wasn’t a woman thing. It was a me thing. Winter had always managed to have fun with guys and never made it something it wasn’t. And then she met Brad and knew what she wanted.

Here I was, unwilling to meet anyone over the years in hopes that one day, my prince would come back for me. I obviously had no idea what I wanted or I’d quit fantasizing about a man I could never truly have.

“So pathetic,” I hummed to myself with a smile. “So very, very pathetic.”

My phone buzzed as I took a sip of my coffee.
